LOWER BURRELL POLICE DEPARTMENT RECEIVES THE 2003 GOVERNOR'S AWARD FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT EXCELLENCE
Mayor Kinosz, Chief Lindo and Officer Weitzel accepted the award on behalf of the Lower Burrell Police Department on Wednesday, April 16, 2003 in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The award stems from a program instituted in 2002, to help insure the safety of residents suffering from Alzheimer's Disease. Family members of Alzheimer's residents are able to complete a short form along with a photograph, which will assist police officers in returning family members to their home.

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT
Westmoreland County Sheriff Chris Scherer has established a program in conjunction with the Area Agency on Aging to supply used, but workable cell telephones and chargers to senior citizens. The City of Lower Burrell is pleased to offer a drop off site for the used cell telephones in City Hall. The Sheriff's Department tests all cell telephones for proper operation and programs, the cell phones to dial the 911 Emergency Center. For additional information, call the Sheriff's Department at 724-830-3820 or the Area Agency on Aging at 1-800-442-8000.
EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARDS
The Lower Burrell Police Department Crime Prevention Unit is offering Emergency Medical cards to the residents of Lower Burrell. The City initiated the concept of this program and wishes to offer it to the residents of Lower Burrell at no cost through the Lower Burrell Police/Crime Prevention Unit. This wallet size emergency card will consist of the person's name, emergency contacts, primary care physician, prescription drugs plus dosage and known allergies. This emergency card will be a quick reference to the carrier and others that may have the need for this emergency information. Anyone wishing to obtain one of these emergency cards can pick up an application at the Lower Burrell Police Department Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., or call 724-339-4287 for more information.

The City is accepting letters from residents interested in sitting on various City Boards and Commissions. Letters of interest should be sent to the City of Lower Burrell, 2800 Bethel Street, Lower Burrell, PA 15068, Attention: Edward A. Kirkwood.
BURRELL SENIOR CITIZENS HOTLINE
The City of Lower Burrell, Burrell Area Chapter of AARP, Lower Burrell and Upper Burrell Township Police are happy to announce a Burrell Senior Citizens Hotline Program. This program is offered to all Lower Burrell and Upper Burrell residents age 65 and older that live alone.
The purpose of this program is geared to the well being of our senior citizens by checking if they need assistance, groceries, medication or assistance in visiting a doctor. The program is being sponsored and operated with the assistance of the Burrell Chapter of AARP, the City of Lower Burrell Police and Mayor's Department and the Upper Burrell Township Police.
The Burrell Area Chapter of AARP members will telephone senior citizens to check on their well being. If the AARP caller discovers that the senior citizen is in need of medication, groceries or assistance to a medical appointment, the caller will arrange for the appropriate assistance of Lower Burrell or Upper Burrell police. If the caller knows that the senior citizen is home but is not responding to the telephone call, they will in turn notify the Lower Burrell or Upper Burrell police, who will check on the well being of that individual. Also, an emergency contact can be made to a relative or friend. If a senior citizen aged 65 or older, or someone who is a relative or friend of theirs wishes to make application, they can be picked up at the Lower Burrell secretary's office or the Upper Burrell Police Department Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
If a senior citizen does not have transportation to these places to pick up the forms, please contact the following:

Monday through Friday between hours of 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
A uniformed officer will come to their residence to pick up the completed applications.

LEAF COMPOSTING
The leaf composting site is now open behind City Hall and compost is available to the residents of the community. The compost site is to the right of the brown building behind City Hall.
TREE BRANCH DISPOSAL FACILITY
The tree branch disposal facility is open behind City Hall. The City will accept tree branches that are up to ten (10) inches in diameter. The site is located to the left of the brown building behind City Hall.
COMPOST AND WOOD CHIPS
The City has available free wood chips and
compost for pick-up behind City Hall.
NEWSPAPER RECYCLING
The City collects newspaper along with the regular recyclable. Please place your newsprint in brown grocery bags or bind with twine.
TREASURER'S OFFICE DRIVE THROUGH LANE
The treasurer's office is located across the street from City Hall and now offers a drive through window for the use of our residents. An entrance to the office is located on the rear of the building for those who would want to enter the building.
